01 Know the city

Getting to know Xiamen: why many Taiwanese visitors land here first

Xiamen is one of China's first special economic zones, a sub-provincial city and a major port on the southeast coast. In 2024 its GDP reached ¥858.901 billion, up 5.5%, with a 0.3 : 36.6 : 63.1 split across primary, secondary and service sectors — services above 60%. Permanent population stood at 5.35 million at end-2024, with an urbanisation rate of 91.01% (Xiamen Statistics Bureau, 2024 bulletin).

The Taiwan connection is Xiamen's strongest card: two-way trade with Taiwan reached ¥52.102 billion in 2024, up 12.0%; the airport serves 29 international and regional destinations including Taipei and Kaohsiung; and value-added of Taiwan-funded industrial enterprises grew 9.0% above scale (same source). Taiwanese businesses, students and young professionals are dense here, so paperwork, services and a Hokkien-speaking environment are all well established.

Treating Xiamen as your first stop is therefore practical: land, sort documents, visit factories and markets, lock in your Xining accommodation and contacts, and only then fly to Qinghai.

02 Arrival & settling in

Your first week: airport, documents, registration and mobile payments

Getting around: Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport sits on the island about 10 km from downtown, roughly a 20-minute taxi ride. High-speed rail serves Xiamen North Station (off-island, connected by Metro Line 1) and Xiamen Station (on-island). Bridges, tunnels and the metro link the island to the mainland districts — choose housing by commute first.

Documents: travel to the mainland uses the Taiwan Compatriot Permit (Mainland Travel Permit for Taiwan Residents). If you do not hold a valid one, a single-entry permit can be applied for at selected ports; check the National Immigration Administration and the port's own notice for which ports, documents and processing hours apply.

Accommodation registration: hotels normally handle this for you. If you stay with friends or rent, register at the local police station within 24 hours of arrival, as required by the district public security authority, and keep the receipt.

First-week list: activate a local mobile number with real-name registration, set up a bank card and mobile payment, install maps and translation tools, save the emergency numbers (110 police, 119 fire, 120 ambulance, 122 traffic), and confirm your Xining contact and accommodation.

03 Housing & neighbourhoods

Where to live in Xiamen: island vs mainland districts, and what to check

Districts: Siming and Huli on the island are the core — mature amenities, short commutes, highest rents. Jimei, Haicang, Tong'an and Xiang'an off-island offer newer housing, lower rents and metro access, and suit longer stays or families.

What to check: the landlord's identity and title documents, exact address and size, deposit and payment cycle, property management and utility costs, furniture inventory, repair responsibilities, early-termination terms, and whether the landlord will support your residence registration. Put every verbal promise into the contract.

Payments: transfer rent to the owner or the account named in the contract, and keep the contract, transfer receipts and handover photos. Never pay a large "deposit" to a personal account and move in the same day.

Transition tip: book a serviced apartment or short let for one to two weeks, compare districts and real commute costs, then sign a longer lease.

04 Work & business

Working, starting a business and business visits in Xiamen

Industrial base: in 2024, electronics accounted for 27.3% of Xiamen's above-scale industrial output and machinery for 32.4% — together nearly 60%; software, biotech and new energy are expanding too (Xiamen Statistics Bureau, 2024 bulletin). Match your supplier or customer search to the right park and district.

Taiwanese business base: Xiamen was one of the first mainland cities to attract Taiwanese investment, with dense electronics, machinery and optoelectronics supply chains. Taiwanese youth entrepreneurship bases and the Xiamen area of the Free Trade Zone are common entry points.

Legal boundaries: employment requires a work permit and the corresponding residence document; setting up a company requires business registration and an approved scope of business; a short business visit does not confer the right to work. Confirm specifics with the competent authority.

Prepare: a one-page brief (sector, product, customers, budget, timeline, resources needed, decision maker) moves a conversation further than a ten-page deck.

05 Daily life & getting around

Everyday Xiamen: metro, payments, food and weather

Getting around: Metro Lines 1, 2 and 3 cover the main island and off-island districts, with buses and BRT filling the gaps; taxis and ride-hailing are inexpensive. Cross-island commuting slows sharply at peak hours — test it at a real weekday time before choosing where to live.

Payments: WeChat Pay and Alipay accept some foreign cards, but success depends on the issuing bank, card type and verification method. Carry a working physical card and some cash as backup.

Food: Hokkien flavours lean fresh and sweet — seafood, satay noodles and misua soup are everyday staples, with clusters around the Eighth Market, Shapowei and Zhongshan Road. Vegetarian and halal options can be filtered by map and review tags.

Weather: summers are hot and humid with typhoon exposure from July to September; winters are mild. During typhoon season watch for ferry, transport and attraction closures and keep your itinerary flexible.

06 Health & emergencies

Healthcare and emergencies: what to prepare

Emergency numbers: 110 police, 119 fire, 120 ambulance, 122 traffic accidents. Call directly in an emergency — do not wait for a website or an AI reply.

Where to go: tertiary hospitals are concentrated on the island and appointments are usually booked through hospital WeChat accounts, apps or the 12320 line; community health centres handle common illnesses and repeat prescriptions with shorter queues.

For Taiwan compatriots: you can register with your Taiwan Compatriot Permit. Some hospitals run international clinics or foreigner services — call ahead to confirm whether English or other language support is available.

Insurance and records: buy cover that includes treatment on the mainland and keep invoices, itemised bills and medical records. Carry a one-page summary of allergies, regular medication and medical history in Chinese and English.

07 Schools & family life

Moving to Xiamen with family: schools, commutes and daily life

School types: public schools allocate places by district and residence conditions; private schools offer more choice; schools for children of foreign nationals and international-curriculum programmes serve different eligibility groups. Admissions rules, fees and available places change each year — confirm directly with the school and the district education bureau.

Typical documents: Taiwan Compatriot Permit, proof of residence (lease or title), vaccination records and the previous school's enrolment certificate or transcripts; the exact list comes from the school.

Commute first: work out the school run before negotiating rent. Cross-district trips on the island take noticeably longer at peak hours — try the route on a weekday.

Health and vaccines: confirm childhood vaccination continuity and resident medical insurance eligibility with the community health centre early, rather than in the rush before term starts.

08 Culture, food & leisure

Culture, food and community: living in Xiamen like a local

City highlights: Gulangyu (a UNESCO World Heritage site), the Ring Road, Shapowei and Zengcuoan; Nanputuo Temple and Hulishan Fortress for history. Book attraction slots and ferries through official channels, especially around holidays.

Hokkien culture: nanyin music, gezi opera and the Mid-Autumn mooncake dice game are part of local life. Community events, Taiwanese youth gatherings, clan associations and trade guilds are the fastest way to meet people.

Weekend radius: Quanzhou (about 30 minutes by high-speed rail), Zhangzhou and Fuzhou are all within two hours, so you can take in southern Fujian culture in one sweep.

How things work: Xiamen runs at a calm pace and prefers appointments to walk-ins. Write your request clearly and book a time — it works far better than showing up.

09 When you need local help

When you need local help: who to ask and what to watch for

Government channels: dial 12345 for the government service hotline (social insurance, housing fund, permits, complaints); district administrative service centres run general counters; Taiwan affairs offices at city and district level are the competent authorities.

Community channels: the local Taiwan business association, Taiwanese youth entrepreneurship bases, trade guilds and clan associations are usually faster than searching online for suppliers, contacts and practical experience.

Scam warning: for anything involving fees, contracts or document handling, verify the other party's business licence and qualifications. Never leave your original Taiwan Compatriot Permit, bank cards or company seal with an agent.

Xining side: the association can pre-arrange your Xining accommodation, premises and contacts so someone meets you on arrival. Scope and fees are confirmed in writing.

10 From Fujian to Qinghai

From Xiamen to Xining: routing, luggage and pacing

Flights: routes from Xiamen to Xining mostly involve one connection (commonly via Xi'an, Chengdu or Chongqing), and direct services also operate. Confirm current schedules, fares and connections with the airline or ticketing platform — total travel time is typically six to nine hours including the stop.

By rail: high-speed rail to Xi'an or Lanzhou and then on to Xining works well if you are not in a hurry; Lanzhou to Xining is about one hour on the Lanzhou–Xinjiang high-speed line.

Luggage: Xining sits at 2,261 m with wide day–night temperature swings, so a shell jacket or light down beats short sleeves. Bring regular medication, sunscreen and lip balm; oxygen canisters are sold at the airport and pharmacies.

Pacing: spend three to seven days in Xiamen finishing documents, factory visits and market checks, then fly to Xining. Take the first two days there slowly — drink water, avoid alcohol and strenuous exercise.

Arrival: send the association your flight number, arrival time and party size in advance; the secretariat can coordinate pickup, your first week's accommodation, and a route that covers the sites and parks you want to see.
