01 Know the city
What kind of city is Xining
Xining is the capital of Qinghai Province, sitting where the Loess Plateau meets the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau. At 2,261 m above sea level, it is the eastern gateway to the plateau and a historic stop on the Southern Silk Road and the Tang–Tibet Ancient Road, with more than two thousand years of history.
At the end of 2024 the city had a permanent population of 2.4769 million, of which 2.0011 million lived in urban areas. Han, Tibetan, Hui, Tu, Salar and Mongolian communities live side by side — multicultural life and halal dining are part of everyday Xining.
In 2024 the city's GDP reached ¥186.209 billion, up 3.1%, with an industry mix of 3.0 : 39.0 : 58.0. Leading sectors include clean energy, green computing, photovoltaics, lithium battery materials, salt-lake chemicals, biomedicine and highland agriculture and animal husbandry.
Xining is known as China's "Summer Capital": a plateau continental climate with cool summers, an average annual temperature of 5.5°C and 2,510.1 hours of sunshine a year (Xining municipal government, "Impressions of Xining").

Getting around: buses cover the main urban districts; taxis and ride-hailing are convenient, and the compact city keeps commuting cheap.
Documents: entry documents for Taiwan compatriots follow the rules of the National Immigration Administration — the original policy texts are available in this site's Policies section. Please complete accommodation registration after checking in.

Chengzhong is the historic commercial centre; Chengxi hosts universities and new retail hubs; Chengdong is known for its rich ethnic character and halal restaurants; Chengbei and Huangzhong carry industrial parks and new residential areas.
Renting: use licensed agencies, serviced apartments or direct-from-landlord listings; verify title documents and the lessor's identity before signing, and put rent, deposit and maintenance duties in writing.
Hotels: options range from international chains to local guesthouses; prices rise noticeably in the July–August peak season, so book early.
Public rental housing and talent-apartment policies follow the latest notices of the provincial and municipal governments. Every listing in this site's "Invest in Xining" directory carries its official source for verification.
